Dr Sohail Inayatullah

Dr Sohail Inayatullah has been writing in the area of future studies for over 30 years. Regarded by his peers as one of the leading 'futurists' in the world, he conducts research into alternative futures with specific interest in examining non-western futures.


Professor Sohail Inayatullah is a political scientist/futurist at Tamkang University, Taiwan and the University of the Sunshine Coast. He also co-teaches an annual course titled, "Futures thinking and strategy development" at Mt Eliza Executive Education, Melbourne Business School. In 1999 he held the Unesco Chair at the University of Trier, Germany. He is the editor of the Journal of Futures Studies.

Along with teaching foresight courses at Tamkang University, he has taught foresight courses for a number of groups including the OIC Standing Committee on Science and Technology, Islamabad, the World Futures Studies Federation (in Andorra, Dubrovnik, Fiji, Thailand), for IBN International on University futures and Public sector futures (Kuala Lumpur), University Sains Malaysia (Penang), APECTF (Bangkok), the Australian Government Department of Fisheries, Agriculture and Forestry – Biosecurity Services (Canberra), the Canadian Police College (Ottawa),
Queensland Government (Brisbane), and for Brisbane, Logan, Maroochydore and Gold Coast City Councils (Southeast Queensland). In the near future he will run foresight courses for APEC and the Australian government on the theme of One health futures (in Hanoi, Bali and Cebu) and for the Victoria courts and tribunals on the theme of Justice futures.
Professor Inayatullah has authored/edited thirty books, journal special issues and cdroms and over 350 journal articles and book chapters as well contributed to the Oxford Encyclopedia of Peace, the Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy, The Macmillan Encyclopedia of the Future and the Unesco Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems.
His areas of presentation include: health futures, policing, security and justice futures; world trends and scenarios; scenario planning; inner narratives and foresight; and educational futures.
