Tracey Wickham

Tracey Wickham MBE OAM is a former Australian middle distance swimmer, who won both the 400 m and 800 m freestyle at the 1978 Commonwealth Games. The same year, she set world records in both events, and won both the 400m and 800m freestyle at the 1978 World Championships, setting a world 400m record of 4.06.28, which stood as the Championship record till 2007. Both world records stood until 1987.
She again won gold in the 400 m and 800 m freestyle at the 1982 Commonwealth Games. She retired soon after. The athlete's oath at the Opening Ceremony of the 1982 Commonwealth Games was also taken by Wickham.
Tracey Wickham is one of our National Treasures. She is just as captivating today as she was during her reign as Australia's Premium Sports Personality – wiser, and seemingly just as youthful.
As a role model for young athletes, a fierce defender of family values or an educator on goal setting and positive attitudes, Tracey's experiences provide inspiration ... and sobering thoughts.
