Paul Gilding
Paul Gilding is one of the world’s most experienced and respected business advisors and public speakers on sustainability and climate change.
He has worked with the CEOs and Executives of many leading corporations around the world and has spoken to hundreds of business conferences and public forums.
With over 30 years experience on sustainability as a corporate advisor, leading activist, businessman and thought leader, Paul provides deep insights into the challenges and opportunities that environmental and social trends present for society, companies and investors. Pullitzer Prize winning writer Tom Friedman featured Paul’s works in the New York Times, leading to publisher Bloomsbury inviting Paul to write a book on The Great Disruption which will be published in the United States in early 2011.
Paul’s experience and career has seen him go from serving in the Australian military, to being global head of Greenpeace to being owner and CEO of two companies, strategy consultancy Ecos Corporation and energy efficiency company Easy Being Green.
He has advised the CEO’s and Executives of companies like DuPont, Ford Motor Company, Anglo American, Diageo and many others. Through this work he has developed close working relationships with a large number of CEO’s and executives around the world, helping them to deepen their understanding of sustainability issues, particularly the relationship to business value and strategy. He has also maintained close links with the NGO community and helped to develop stronger partnerships, understanding and relationships with business
Paul Gilding is an established global thought leader in sustainability, with activities such as:
• Serving on the Global Core Faculty of the Prince of Wales’s Business and the Environment Program run by Cambridge University and is Chairman of the Australian program. He has served on faculty for the South African, European, UK and United States programs.
• Regularly publishing papers including several thought pieces that have been credited with substantially shifting the global debate. These have including co-authoring “Single Bottom Line Sustainability” (2001), which advocated a focus on shareholder value in developing corporate sustainability strategy and “Scream Crash Boom” (2005) which predicted the world would soon face a major ecological breakdown, a tipping point on climate change and a dramatic clean tech boom in response.
• A further major thought piece “The Great Disruption” on the global economic impacts of an ecological crash was published in 2008. It has been widely acclaimed and written about around the world and will be published in book form by Bloomsbury Press in the United States in 2011.
• A joint paper with Professor Jorgen Randers, co-author of the Limits to Growth will be published in May 2010 by the Journal of Global Responsibility. It is titled ‘the One Degree War Plan” and describes how society is likely to respond on a war footing to climate change when it accepts the civilization threatening nature of the issue.
• He is a regular and sought after speaker at business conferences and corporate events around the world and his speaking and work has taken him to over 30 countries.
Paul is a director a number of non-profit organizations including:
• Founding Director of the internet based youth charity The Inspire Foundation where he also served a term as Chairman.
• Founding Director of Climate Coolers an Australian charity which recently launched Natalie Isaac’s 1 million women campaign to mobilise women in climate change action
• Founding Director and now council member of the Australian Business Community Network – a charity led by the CEO’s of major Australian companies.
His work has been long recognized around the world including:
• In 1992 the World Economic Forum (WEF) appointed Paul as a Global Leader for Tomorrow
• In 1993 Paul was presented by the Prime Minister with an Australia Day Award for Outstanding Achievement for services to the environment.
• In 1994, he was listed by Time International in its “Time’s Global 100 Young Leaders for the New Millennium”
• In 1997, he received the prestigious global Tomorrow Magazine Global Environmental Leadership Award.
