Allan was the first person in the world with insulin dependent diabetes to complete, using manual diabetes management, an Ironman Triathlon. He has completed over 100 endurance events including two ultra distance Ironman Triathlons, two (2 day) Mt Buller to Melbourne Adventure Challenges, The Maui Channel Swim and two Six-Foot Track Marathons. He trained the 1992 America's Cup crew of Challenge Australia and Australia's first female cyclist to complete the 4,700km Race Across America.

He contributes specialist chapters for books like The Fat Loss Handbook: A guide for professionals and has published in the international scientific literature. He is a member of the Gatorade Sport Science Institute Speakers' Bureau, the New Children's Hospital Institute of Sport Medicine and an adviser for the Australian Association for Exercise and Sport Science Executive Board.
