Deciding to open your function with a renowned inspirational speaker can create an enthusiastic, receptive audience and in turn, result in a successful and memorable event.

If you have a clear idea of what you want to achieve and the qualities you’re after in a speaker, then selecting the right one for you can be a breeze. Most of us however, have some idea of what we want, but the number of speakers, styles and inspirational topics on offer can be overwhelming.

To get you started, here are five of the top qualities we consider essential in a great inspirational speaker. Ensuring you have these qualities on your speaker checklist will help you narrow the field and pinpoint your perfect match.

1. In-demand

When a speaker is highly sought after, it usually tells you a lot about the caliber of their work and their reputation. If you contact them and discover their calendar is quickly filling up, this may mean the speaker can deliver an outstanding speech. With this in mind, try to book as far in advance as possible to ensure availability of your chosen speaker. It’s common for great speakers to be booked well over 12 months in advance.

2. Great resume

Look for someone whose CV outlines why they are the ideal speaker. After checking through a couple of biographies, you will be able to choose the best one for your event. The CV should provide details about the speaker’s training, their specialized topics, and their experience.

Your speaker’s bureau can do much of this ground work for you – after all, that’s what they’re here for. After discussing your objectives, your speakers bureau will filter down to those speakers most relevant and most in line with the purpose of your event and your company culture, presenting a suggested short list for you to review.

3. Proven track record

We can sing our own praises till the cows come home, but it’s a recommendation or endorsement from an independent party that really makes an impact and gives us confidence. Fortunately, most speakers have websites that include testimonials from previous clients. And of course, your speakers bureau will be only too happy to help provide feedback from previous events and clients as well. After all, we won’t recommend a speaker unless they have the necessary qualities to provide an outstanding service and to be the right fit for your event.

4. Passionate

A superb speaker is passionate about their topic of discussion and personable. More than any other keynote speakers, a great inspirational speaker needs to be able to connect with their audience; to be relate-able. Otherwise, their ability to inspire will be diluted at best. If a speaker exhibits passion, authenticity and is relatable, they will have their audience instantly engaged and receptive to their ideas.

5. Confident

For the speaker to move the crowd, they must be confident and not worried or jittery. You can easily tell this from your interview with them, although an experienced speaker has usually long overcome any potential anxiety about speaking and delivers smoothly and professionally. A skillful orator will speak to you confidently and convey their competence with ease.

Now that your checklist is well in hand, take a look at some of our inspirational speakers who we believe possess these top five qualities and more.
