Amy Carter-James's Biography
Amy Carter-James defined what makes a “social entrepreneur” long before the term became "de rigueur". From the moment she started on her entrepreneurial journey in business, after an inspiring gap year as an 18 year old, she was certain that life was about having a net positive impact.
Driven by this purpose in life, she inspired her husband, Neal, to move to Mozambique to develop, build & create an eco-boutique hotel, Guludo Beach Lodge with the local community, that would go on to become a multi-award winning business, held up as a shining example and case study on the sustainable impact that it is possible to achieve in the travel & tourism industry; a 24 bed property helped to lift more than 36,000 people out of poverty. Using an innovative approach to charitable giving, Amy founded a UK registered charity, Nema Foundation, to achieve these goals.
Amy’s passion for impact, purpose driven businesses blows your mind, when she shares her thoughts on the many amazing ways entrepreneurs can “walk the talk” and lead by example to create solutions to global challenges facing the world today.
Amy’s drive and entrepreneurial approach to solving big challenges led to her being recognised as the UK’s “Social Entrepreneur of the Year” and the International Hotel Investment Forum’s “Young Leader”. From this platform she has spent over a decade working with teams around the globe; from start-ups and scale-ups to leading-brands, to embed impact into their core DNA and help them scale responsibly to amplify their impacts.
Sadly, in 2019, an unprecedented cyclone destroyed the hotel in Mozambique and left the entire region without shelter, food or livelihoods, providing a glimpse into the future of the existential threat posed by the climate emergency. Angered that the people least responsible suffer the most, Amy knew she had to act. She co-founded rippl., a groundbreaking impact venture capital firm leveraging the tourism industry to build a diversified climate action portfolio and collectively contribute towards Drawdown.
