Bryan Martin's Biography

Bryan Martin has been involved in the thoroughbred industry for more than 40 years and recently retired as one of Australia's most prominent race callers.

 

Bryan has raced racehorses for more than 30 years with Lindsay Park, Colin Alderson, Lee Freedman, Bart Cummings and John Symons and has extensive experience in managing racing syndicates. Bryan Martin has purchased and managed many successful racehorses, including being a co-manager and part owner of dual Cox Plate winner, Fields of Omagh winning $6.5 million in prize money and founding and co-managing the “The No Big Deal“ racing syndicate.

 

Bryan Martin has called races in every State of Australia as well as New Zealand, New Guinea, Hong Kong, Dubai, Japan and Canada. He was voted Australia's most popular racing commentator in 1990 and 2005. Bryan is a board member of Living Legends; and a former director of Australian Racing Museum Limited. Bryan Martin was awarded the "Bert Wolfe" Media excellence and the Australian Sports Medal 2000 for services to the horseracing industry. He was an Australia Day Ambassador from 2002 to 2006.

 

Bryan is currently working on the Roy Higgins statue for the Victoria racing Club as project manager, a concept he designed and took to state Government and the racing Industry for funding.

 

Bryan always wanted to be a race commentator from when he heard the Melbourne Cup in 1956. In a Radio Audition in 1966 on 3UZ he called a phantom race from the Spring prior and was awarded 3 gongs and $2 first prize. Bryan started in radio at 3AW as office boy and turn table operator 1967, gained position at Radio 5DN Adelaide in 1970 as turn table operator and trainee race caller. He was offered a position to return to Melbourne to join the number 1 racing station in Australia 3UZ along side legend Bert Bryant and John Russell.

Bryan worked at 3UZ from 1972 to 1984 when offered a position as no 2 caller to Bill Collins at 3DB and Channel 7 and took over as the no 1 race caller from Bill Collins during Easter 1988 when racing returned to 3UZ. Bryan was chief caller at 3UZ from 1988 to 2005. He joined new racing TV station TVN from May 2005 to November 2007 before retiring from calling. Bryan was approached by Sports radio station SEN to return to calling in 2010 where he calls during the period of Spring through to Autumn as well as hosting Radio Racing Show- Racing Fix 8-9 Saturday morning and hosting – Your Racing Life 11-12 for the 6 months Spring to Autumn.
