Catherine McGregor AM's Biography

Catherine McGregor is the Queensland Australian of the Year for 2016. She was awarded this honour for her service as an advocate for the transgender community and her wider contribution to understanding of gender variance and diversity.

 

She served as a military officer in both the Australian Regular Army and the Royal Australian Air Force. On Australia Day 2012 she was awarded the Order of Australia in the Military Division for her exceptional service to the Australian Army. She entered the Royal Military College Duntroon in 1974 and served on operations overseas including in command of the Training Team in East Timor. She affirmed her female gender in July 2012 and was the highest ranking transgender military officer in the world until her retirement.

 

She has also worked in politics and the media and has written widely on politics and sport. Catherine is often sort after for her expert opinion on both the ABC and commercial networks. She currently writes a fortnightly column for the Daily Telegraph.  During the summer of 2014-15 Catherine was a part of ABC Grandstand’s team covering the Indian tour of Australia. She has also published two books on sport.

 

Catherine has a compelling personal narrative of survival in the face of personal challenges as well as insights into the design and implementation of strategic policy at a high level. She is a Trustee of numerous Community organizations including The Pinnacle Foundation, The Kaleidoscope Trust.
