Corey Payne's Biography

A dedicated and inspirational speaker, Corey Payne is committed to his passion to educate disadvantaged youth and design programmes to mentor and aid financial assistance. Chairman of the Future Directions Network, Corey is a truly motivational speaker with a story to inspire.

Bulldogs back rower Corey Payne has been named NSW Young Australian of the Year 2013 for his inspirational work off the field as a role model for the youth of Western Sydney.

Corey Payne fulfilled a childhood dream when he debuted for the Bulldogs in 2010, after previously playing with the St George Illawarra Dragons and the Wests Tigers.

As an accomplished first grader, Corey realised he needed something more to fall back on. Having since completed an undergraduate commerce degree, Corey now juggles his postgraduate studies with his training and playing requirements as a first grade NRL footballer.

Passionate about encouraging Western Sydney High School students to continue with tertiary education, Corey is on the board of the scholarship committee of Youth Off the Streets. He also established and runs the Future Directions Network (FDN) to provide financial support, mentoring and careers advice for young people to go on to university.

The mission of FDN is to inform, inspire and educate youth from disadvantaged backgrounds about the importance of education. This is achieved through the delivery of ambition and aspiration building programmes, mentoring programmes and financial assistance throughout high schools in New South Wales, Australia.

He says he is determined that the kids on the borderline, the children of parents who didn't go to university and first generation Australians get every chance to continue their studies.

In 2012 Corey was awarded a prestigious Churchill Fellowship to research culturally diverse programs that build ambition and aspiration in young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to inspire them to continue their academic studies. Corey will carry out his research in South Africa, Spain, Brazil and the UK.

He played in the National Rugby League competition for the past decade whilst completing undergraduate studies and postgraduate studies at the University of Sydney.
