Danny Frawley's Biography

In a 25-plus year span as a player, coach and media personality, Danny ‘Spud’ Frawley has become among the most respected figures in the AFL. Danny’s experience coupled with his good nature has made him an excellent contributor to Triple M, Fox Sports and the Nine Network's AFL coverage over the past few years. Danny is also a long time co-host of After the Bounce with Jason Dunstall and has served as the Chief Executive of the AFL Coaches Association.

Danny is currently the defensive coach with the St Kilda Football Club and away from the game, Danny is a respected speaker, drawing on his experiences as a leader and mentor.

Danny’s also proven hugely popular in the ‘Yesterday’s Hereos’ segment on Fox Sports show After the Bounce, where he takes on former Hawk Jason Dunstall in a series of challenges.

On-field, Danny was one of the great players of the late 20th century. From Bungaree near Ballarat in Victoria's west, he was zoned to St Kilda and made his senior debut with the Saints in 1984.

Over the next 12 years, Danny established his reputation as a fine leader who was uncompromising on the last line of defence for the Saints. Named captain in 1987, he was a regular Victorian representative, playing for the state 11 times. In 1988 and 1990, he was honoured with All-Australian selection and victory in St Kilda's Best and Fairest.

He led the Saints back to the finals for the time in 18 years in 1991, becoming St Kilda's longest serving captain with 177 games at the helm up until his retirement in 1995. Danny moved directly into coaching as an assistant under Tony Shaw at Collingwood post-career, impressing to earn the post of senior coach at Richmond in 2000. Richmond's fifth longest serving coach, the highlight of Danny’s five seasons at Punt Road was third in 2001 the club's best finish in 19 years.

On screen and over the airwaves, ‘Spud’ has perfectly blended his unique sense of humour and fun-loving nature with insightful and comprehensive analysis of modern-day AFL football. But while everything seemed ideal on the surface to the outside world, Danny was experiencing a very different existence behind closed doors.

After attempting to guide Essendon FC’s coaches through the drugs scandal that rocked the game in 2013 as CEO of the AFL Coaches Association, Danny took time away from the game to deal with depression and the nervous breakdown he suffered.
