Fran Kelly's Biography

Highly respected radio presenter and current affairs journalist Fran Kelly, is one of Australia’s leading political correspondents and the presenter of ABC Radio National’s agenda-setting Breakfast program.

 

Fran began work in journalism at the age of 29. In 1988, she moved to Sydney to work on Triple J’s The Drum, offering opinion and analysis on politics and current affairs. 1990 saw her become a reporter for ABC Radio National. Her tenure here had her holding positions as the ABC’s Europe Correspondent based in London the Political Editor for The 7.30 Report and the political correspondent for the prestigious AM program.

 

Radio National Breakfast is Australia’s leading national morning current affairs radio show. It’s daily agenda is a mix of national and international politics, current affairs and social issues, drawing on the world’s leading commentators, players and thinkers. It’s influence makes it required listening for opinion leaders across the country.

 

In 2001 she became political editor for ABC TV's 7.30 Report. After two years she took up an overseas posting as the ABC's Europe correspondent based in London. In March 2005, Fran called time on London, returning home to Australia to take up her current position. She revels in Breakfast's wide brief, which has reignited her passion for the arts, sport, issues and travel, and is in the thick of Australian and world politics.

 

In 2008, Fran was involved with the documentary series The Howard Years, for which she interviewed former US president George W. Bush. That same year, Fran received the Same Same 25 Award, recognising her as one of the country’s most influential gay and lesbian Australians.
