Giaan Rooney OAM's Biography

Giaan’s trademark is her million-dollar smile, Olympic Gold Medals and World Records to her name, Giaan Rooney has had a fantastic swimming career.  

Giaan burst onto the international swimming scene at the age of 15, winning Gold in the 100m Backstroke at the 1998 Commonwealth Games.  

She demonstrated her versatility at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, finishing the meet in style with two Silver Medals from the Relay events. Giaan followed this up by winning the 200m Freestyle at the 2001 World Championships in Japan.  

But her greatest achievement to date came as a key member of the 4 x 100m Medley Relay team that won Gold at the 2004 Athens Olympics. Giaan retired from swimming in 2006. Giaan then joined the Nine Network as a presenter. Her first role was to participate in Torvill & Dean's Dancing on Ice where she had to bow our gracefully after breaking her ankle. With her elite sporting background, Giaan became involved across a range of shows including being a co-anchor of Wide World of Sports, presenting stories on Getaway, Postcards, the 2010 Winter Olympics, 2012 London Olympics and Nine's Spring Racing coverage.   In 2007, Giaan was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia.  

In 2013, after six years with Channel Nine, Giaan joined Channel Seven Melbourne where she is the weekday weather presenter and Channel Seven Ambassador. In 2016, Giaan moved back home to Queensland where she is sports anchor for Channel 7.  

She is also an Ambassador for CareSuper, Jockey, Bayer Animal Health, Women's Fitness Magazine and Eureka Street Furniture and is heavily involved in community initiatives, such as the Alannah & Madeline Foundation, Nelune Foundation and the Lort Smith Animal Home.  

As well as her television and community commitments, Giaan is busy on the speaking circuit where she is in demand as an MC and speaker.
