Gordon Bray's Biography

Gordon Bray is one of Australia’s leading sports broadcasters and for rugby fans has been the “Voice of Rugby” in this country for over thirty years and has broadcast more than 350 rugby internationals including, six Rugby World Cups.


Gordon’s passion for sport saw him join the ABC in 1969 as a specialist trainee in the sports department. He has also commentated for the BBC, Network Ten, Fox Sports, HKTVB and Singapore TV before spending sixteen years at SEVEN calling rugby and a variety of other sports including yachting, hockey, golf and tennis.
A versatile broadcaster, Gordon Bray has covered nearly every sport at the highest level of international competition, including eight Olympic Games (Hockeyroos gold medal campaigns 1988 & 2000) and five Commonwealth Games as well as completing six Sydney Hobart yacht races on the official radio relay vessel.
His golf commentary experience spans three Australian TV networks covering the Australasian circuit as well as the 1989 World Cup in Spain for ABC Sport. He is also the author and editor of several books on rugby, including The Australian Rugby Companion - volumes 1 & 2, The Spirit of Rugby, The Laws of Rugby Explained and From the Ruck.
Gordon Bray has co-produced and hosted many TV sports specials including the acclaimed Swinging Through Ireland - a golf documentary which was made in conjunction with the Irish Tourist Board. His company Bray Sports Services Pty Ltd also produces corporate videos – most recently featuring Denarau Island Golf and Racquet Club and Bringing the World to Fiji – a program aimed at attracting overseas investors to Fiji as well as a documentary on PURE FIJI – the global beauty and skin care company.
His community activities include serving Sydney Legacy over three decades (he is a former junior legatee) as well as performing the role of an Australia Day ambassador. He was an ambassador for the Paris 2012 Olympic bid and a rugby ambassador for Austrade during the 2003 Rugby World Cup.
Gordon Bray is a past recipient of the Penguin Award, Australia’s highest peer award for a sports presenter and in 2001 received a one-off Sydney 2000 Prime Minister’s medal for Services to sports broadcasting. He was awarded an Order of Australia medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list in 2005 for services to sport, charity and the community. Gordon’s commentary duties at the 2008 Beijing Olympics were Hockey, Sailing, Shooting. Tae-Kwon-Do, table tennis and badminton.
After over 40 years in the media, he has also built a reputation as a knowledgeable and entertaining after dinner speaker and a skilled master of ceremonies. He is one of the industry’s most experienced active commentators and is an internationally regarded sports broadcaster with a high national profile. His knowledge and fastidious research coupled with a life long passion for sport have been major factors in his career success and longevity.
Since completing his contract at SEVEN at the end of 2010, Gordon has commentated for ESPN, and covered the 2011 Rugby World Cup for SKY TV NZ, Australian Associated Press and The Land newspaper. He has signed on as a member of the Macquarie Network’s commentary team at the 2012 London Olympics.
