Mark Sheen's Biography

Mountaineer, Mark Sheen, part of a three man climbing team, has become the first West Australian to climb 8850m Mount Everest.
In June 2007, overcoming strong winds and deteriorating conditions Mark reached the top of the world. Mark Sheen had battled deep snow, deadly crevasses and oxygen-starved air to achieve his dream of conquering Everest.
Mark’s overwhelming passion for mountaineering came after travelling extensively through Europe the eastern states of Australia.
Between work as a depot manager and eventually as a rigger and Refinery Operator on various industrial and construction sites across Western Australia he went on his first trip to the big mountains in the Karakorum Range in Pakistan in 2001 on a 7027m mountain expedition. This expedition went well and the idea to climb Everest was born. After spending years training and hiking in many parts of Australia, and several occasional overseas trips, Mark went to Argentina to be an assistant guide on the highest peak outside the Himalayas…Aconcagua at 6960m. Unfortunately, after rock climbing before the trip Mark Sheen fell and broke his ankle badly. This meant no walking for four months.
Following a long recovery period Mark went back to Pakistan in 2006 on an international expedition to climb the 8047m Broad Peak situated next to the world’s second highest mountain – K2. This expedition proved a valuable training ground for Mark’s Everest attempt. Directly after his Broad Peak climb Mark travelled to Oman where he undertook several major solo hikes before returning to Australia in 2006.
In April 2007 Mark Sheen left Australia for Everest where he commenced his climb from the Tibet side of the mountain. After a long wait at Advance Basecamp he reached the summit on June 5, just before sunrise, and only accompanied by his Sherpa.
