Matt Skinner's Biography

Matt Skinner is a wine expert on a mission to tear down the barrier of stuffy elitism that holds many back from truly enjoying wine. Referred to as the 'first-ever super-sommelier’ by UK newspaper The Guardian, Matt believes wine is for everyone. His relaxed, informal style and ability to simplify the complicated has become his calling card. In 2012, he was named Best Young International Wine Writer by Grand Cru d'Italia and chosen by supermarket Coles to be the face of their First Choice Liquor stores.

Matt first entered the public eye as Jamie Oliver’s laid-back Aussie mate in TV series ‘Oliver’s Twist’ and ‘Jamie’s Kitchen’. Since then, Matt has written eight books about wine, been shortlisted twice for the IWSC International Communicator of the Year Award and contributed regular columns to many newspapers and food magazines. He currently acts as a wine consultant for the Jamie Oliver Group, Plumm Glassware and Jetstar airlines.

Matt stumbled on his passion for wine accidentally when the owner of the bottleshop he worked at opened a few bottles of white in the hopes of enlightening his 17-year-old employee. It worked, and after completing several wine courses Matt won a scholarship to a prestigious year-long wine course. The course ended with a competition, which Matt won; his prize was a three-month tour of some of Europe's finest wine-growing regions.

Matt returned invigorated and ready for the next adventure, which arrived in the form of 25-year old Jamie Oliver. Introduced by mutual friend Tobie Puttock, the two hit it off immediately. A few years later, Jamie asked Matt to move to London and be the head sommelier at Fifteen, a restaurant Oliver was setting up to train disadvantaged youths for careers in the restaurant industry. Matt said yes, and spent the next six years training and working alongside Oliver, Puttock and the apprentices.

Matt’s first book, Thirsty Work, was an introduction to understanding and appreciating wine and it was based on the way he taught the young apprentices at Fifteen. It became an international bestseller and has now been published in 17 countries and 10 languages. Heard it Through the Grapevine, his 2008 no-nonsense guide to choosing wine, is being reprinted this year. From 2006 to 2010, Matt also published a popular annual wine round up called The Juice.

After returning to Melbourne in 2008 with his wife Carly, Matt teamed up with Puttock to film two series for the Lifestyle FOOD network. In 'Tobie & Matt' the pair travelled around Asia, and Europe, where they cooked, drank and explored the local culture. In 2011, he published Matt Skinner’s Wine Guide, a comprehensive review of over 250 wines for all budgets and occasions.

Matt works, plays, consults and writes in Melbourne, where he lives with his wife and two children. He is a wine educator (history and tasting), he shares knowledge on matching wines with food and he is a topical celebrity speaker.
