Mia Freedman's Biography

Mia Freedman is the co-founder, content director and publisher of the Mamamia Women's Network (MWN), Australia's largest media company for women. MWN publishes several popular websites including Mamamia.com.au, the site she founded in her loungeroom in 2007 after leaving traditional media.

Mia is also a popular columnist, author, blogger, publisher, media personality and sought-after keynote speaker and Master of Ceremonies. Mia Freedman has been called the voice of her generation.

By 2012 Mamamia.com.au employed 20 people, attracting 500,000 readers each month. Two years later, her husband (now the CEO) came on board and together they grew her personal blog into a giant women's network that generates 40 million page views per month and employs more than 80 people. It is the fastest growing and most successful independent women's media company in Australia.

MWN also publishes health and beauty site The Glow, parenting site ivillage and Debrief Daily, a site for women 40+. The network reaches four million women per month and is the leading independent digital publisher in Australia. As the former Editor of Cosmopolitan, Cleo and Dolly and chair of the National Body Image Advisory group, Mia has always been a high-profile advocate for a more realistic portrayal of women in the media.

Mia's engaging personality, her impressive knowledge in print and social media and insight into issues surrounding women in the media and in the workforce have placed her in high demand as a speaker. She talks with passion and conviction about harnessing the power of social media and using social media to boost your business. Mia's own story of dazzling career highs and devastating personal lows is also highly inspirational and thought provoking.

Mia Freedman began her career doing work experience at Cleo magazine aged 19. Five years later, aged 24, she became the youngest editor in Cosmopolitan's global empire of 58 titles. In the seven years she edited Cosmo, Mia took the magazine to the number one position in circulation, readership and ad revenue in the young women's market.

By 2004 Mia had become editor in chief of Cosmo, Cleo and Dolly and was well known for her body image advocacy. She was the first and only magazine editor to include women of all shapes, sizes and nationalities in every issue and she continues to be outspoken in the need for a more diverse representation of women in the media. In 2008 she was appointed chair of the National Body Image Advisory Group.

Mia Freedman is the author of three books: The New Black, Mamamia: A Memoir Of Mistakes, Magazines & Motherhood (which details her rise to the top of the media tree and the surprising things she learned when she decided to walk away from her high-flying corporate life to pursue a different kind of happiness) and Mia Culpa: Confessions From The Watercooler of Life.

Mia also appears on TV regularly as a panellist on The Project and hosts podcasts and video series for the Mamamia Women's Network.
