Paul Salmon's Biography

Paul Salmon has been a successful professional athlete, media personality and businessman in Australia for over 30 years. Affectionately known as "Fish", Salmon was a well-known ruck man over a very long period of time in the Australian Football League.

A 2009 inductee into the Australian Football League “Hall of Fame” he retired as a 324 game player with two AFL Premierships and as a 7 time leading goal kicker for the Essendon FC. A three time All Australian who won state representation for the ‘Big V’ 14 times he also won two Hawthorn FC Best and Fairest awards and has been inducted into the Hawthorn FC ‘Team of the Century’, Essendon FC ‘Hall of Fame’ and gained selection as a 20th century ‘Champion of Essendon’ at selection 26.  

A business owner/operator since the age of 19, Paul was the founder and company Director of two start-up businesses, the first was a ground breaking hospitality and tourism operation, Journey Corporation Pty Ltd, which was the first to take guests behind the scenes of Australia’s biggest sports and entertainment events to meet the stars. Its offshoot, Work@Play, focused on behavioral change within corporations by recreating elite sporting environments where key messages were delivered by Australian sporting greats in iconic venues. The second became Australia’s leading ‘collaborative marketing’ and ‘executive connection’ company; Premium Brands Group Pty Ltd.  

Currently Paul is Founder and Director of Torus Group Pty Ltd, a company focused on energy  management technologies. Paul has been part of a team that secured a permit for a major property development in Melbourne, he has established offices for Torus Group in Beijing and Abu Dhabi, secured technology licensing rights out of the US and has traveled the world meeting with business and Government leaders. The journey to ‘go global’ has been full of detailed planning, challenges and relationship building that make for fascinating insight and great learnings.  

After more than 20 years of professional sport and now 30 years of entrepreneurship working with some of Australia’s leading brands and companies his networks sit at the highest level in corporate and sporting Australia.  

Paul has authored several books. He released an autobiography called ‘The Big Fish’ : Paul Salmon's Own Story in 2001, and ‘Fish Tales’, a book recalling humorous on and off field incidents, in 2002. He followed up in 2003 with another book titled ‘More Fish Tales’. A lot of work went into brainstorming the titles!  

Paul has been a regular ‘Australia Day Ambassador’ for many years, he was awarded the ‘Australian Sports Medal’, was named AFL ‘Personality of the Year’ and crowned Victorian ‘Father of the Year’ all in the year 2000. Paul has performed ambassadorial and advisory board roles with a range of organizations and charities and is considered a leader in the community.  

Paul has had extensive experience in the media for many years both during and post his football career. From hosting the ‘Grand Final Footy Marathon’ and Sportsworld for Channel 7, The ‘Red Carpet’ at the Logies and ‘Time Out For Serious Fun’ with Kate Fischer for Channel 9 to match day commentator and special comments expert on TripleM and the ABC, Paul has broad experience on many levels.  

With an extensive career on and off the field, Paul has been engaged as a guest speaker and Master of Ceremonies for many events. His style is consistent with his personality in that he is articulate, engaging, warm and humorous. His background as a professional athlete, owning and operating 'customer service' oriented businesses, running corporate team building events around Australia and abroad, as well as his extensive media experience, has him well positioned to adapt to a variety of roles.   

Paul has conducted leadership and network development training for some of Australia's largest companies and been an after dinner speaker with many stories from a lifetime in sport and business.
