Peter Meares's Biography

Peter Meares has been one of Queensland's leading sports commentators for the past 35 years. Best known for his hosting of the Brisbane Commonwealth Games in 1982 with the ABC, Peter has been a familiar face on television throughout Australia. He is appearing regularly on ABC Radio, guest speaking and has written three books, legends of Australian Sport – The Inside Story (UQP 2003), Wallaby Legends, (Lothian 2005) and “All Piss and Wind.” (ABC Books 2008).


At Channel 7, Peter presented sports news for 12 years, covered the Barcelona Olympics in 1992 and two Commonwealth Games, as well as calling network Basketball and Tennis. Peter has won many media awards, and was made an Advance Australia Ambassador for services to sport in 1983. He's called almost every popular sport, and a few exotic ones, like Korfball and Sepak Takraw!

Peter is a popular MC, with many tales to tell of life in front of the cameras, and behind the scenes in the grandstand or dressing-room. He especially loves talking to youngsters about sport, journalism and the media industry. He loves interviewing and his series “Superstars and Legends” ran on Fox Sports for 5 years and has been shown on Pay TV around the world.Amongst the many celebrities he has interviewed have been Greg Norman, Wally Lewis, Kieren Perkins, Leigh Matthews, Frank Farina, Susie O’Neill, Ken Rosewall, Steven Bradbury, Allan Border, David Campese, Ric Charlesworth, Lisa Curry-Kenny, Anne Sargeant, Margaret Court and Pam Burridge.

As a sportsman, Peter earned a Cricket Blue with Sydney University and was selected for Australian Universities in 1968. He also played 1st grade Rugby with GPS in Brisbane and ran the Gold Coast Marathon. On radio, Peter has gone full circle, returning to where he started, on the ABC. He is a regular panellist on Steve Austin’s top-rating “The Philosophy of Sport” programme on Brisbane 612 each Monday night at 8pm.

He has written six books: “Legends of Australian Sport – The Inside Story”, “Wallaby Legends”, “All Piss and Wind”, “Treading Water – the life story of Tracey Wickham”, “The First 100 Years – a history of UQ Rugby Club" and “Back to the Studio”. He keeps fit playing golf and tennis and loves talking sport.
