Shane Webcke's Biography

Acknowledged for his outstanding career in Rugby League, Shane Webcke is an author, speaker and media personality. Shane is also heavily involved in Community Initiatives and is a great role model and professional speaker.  

Shane Webcke is the consummate team man. The Broncos leading big man who started his football career playing under 8’s as a five-year-old at Clifton, and finished it as arguably Rugby League’s leading prop forwards. Webcke went on to play 21 times for Queensland. He also played 19 Tests for Australia and during his career became the No.1 prop of his era and is regarded as one of the best of all time in his position. In 2008, the Centenary of Rugby League, But his greatest contribution to rugby league was as a stalwart for his beloved Brisbane Broncos. In a career spanning 12 seasons, he played 263 first grade matches, was a member of four premiership teams and captained the club on 10 occasions. He also won the prestigious Paul Morgan Medal as Player of the Year on two occasions and has been awarded life membership of the Broncos.

Now retired, his autobiography is titled “Warhorse” (nickname), Shane Webcke has the country roots and love of the land that often produces the hardest sportsmen. He has always been a tough competitor as a player and assistant coach at his beloved club, the Brisbane Broncos.  

Shane Webcke could well be regarded as a modern-day sporting marvel. Not only is he one of the most decorated front row forwards to have played rugby league during its 100 years. He is most intelligent and is one of the most universally liked and respected. Shane is also the publican of an historic watering hole, and works as a television sports presenter.  

Born in to a battling farming family on Queensland’s Darling Downs on September 26 1974, Webcke was ‘given’ very little – except love, guidance and ethics from his mum and dad. What he gained as a youngster growing up he worked for, and he realised that if he was to make his way in the world as a successful rugby league player, he would have to continue down that road.  

Shane Webcke retired from rugby league at the end of Season 2006 – with another premiership victory – and among his other media and business interests, is an ambassador for Suncorp Sunwise, Junior Rugby League and the APN Adopt-A-Family campaign. Shane is also an engaging motivational speaker and raconteur.  

While his sporting story is an enlightening one, his insight in to the success of the Broncos and his opinions on character building and principles gained from a self-disciplined life are both engrossing and insightful.  Shane also presents on teamwork, leadership and achieving success  

Shane has complemented his playing career by maintaining and developing a quality group of business partners and relationships.

Shane is also an extremely polished and popular television presenter. He provides expert commentary on rugby league and reads the ratings winning sports bulletin for Channel Seven’s nightly news in Brisbane. Shane has become a respected voice in rugby league since hanging up his boots in 2006 and is acknowledged as one of the most articulate and intelligent men in the sport.
