Stephen Yarwood's Biography

Passionate about cities and innovation, Stephen Yarwood is a well-known and respected contemporary Urban Planner in Australia who consults internationally as an Urban Futurist.

 

The former Lord Mayor of Adelaide and founder of city2050, he plans, trains, talks and facilitates. His consultancy specialises in the future of cities and innovation in urban development; governance, leadership, strategic planning, policy development, master planning and place making.

 

During 2016 Stephen worked throughout Australia and in New Zealand, the USA, Taiwan, Singapore, Saudi Arabia and India. He is a global advisor to Airbnb (and Airbnb host himself), the biggest provider of tourist accommodation in the world.

 

At the age of 39, Stephen was the 62nd Lord Mayor of the City of Adelaide, the youngest person to hold this position. Adelaide undertook a rapid transformation during his term, which was recognised by the New York Times, Singapore Centre for Liveable Cities, National Geographic and Lonely Planet.

 

He is an award winning member of the Planning Institute of Australia with a Bachelor of Arts (Planning), Graduate Diploma (Regional and Urban Planning), Graduate Diploma (Environmental Studies) and a Masters Degree in Business Administration.

 

Prior to being an elected member Stephen worked in State Government as an Urban Planner, the South Australian Parliament as a Researcher and in Local Government as a Principal Planner. His planning experience is exceptionally diverse, from strategy to implementation, dealing with most land use types and a diverse range of community, design and development issues at all levels of Government.

 

He has lectured at universities locally, nationally and internationally and has been a keynote speaker at many conferences around the world speaking on innovation in cities and their management.

 

A recipient of scholarships to study in Japan and Denmark, he has worked in India, Thailand, Singapore, the Middle East, the USA and New Zealand and led delegations to Europe (inc. Scandinavia), China, North America and the Middle East.

 

He lives in the heart of Adelaide, walking distance from all the cool stuff, and enjoys science, the arts, culture, technology and exploring the cities of the world.
