Tim Atterton's Biography

Tim Atterton comes from a strong family business background in the North-East of England. Despite this pedigree, he enrolled on a Law degree, graduating in 1976. However, he soon determined that the legal profession offered few entrepreneurial challenges and little excitement!
Despite his longstanding Business School affiliation, Tim Atterton regards himself as a “practitioner”, rather than an “academic”, and has been actively involved in establishing and managing a succession of businesses since the age of 16! Over the past two decades, Tim has worked with small and medium sized, independent businesses, and their stakeholders in more than 40 different countries, and has been contracted to work with many prestigious international organizations including the United Nations, the World Bank Group and the European Commission.
Tim Atterton is widely acknowledged both nationally and internationally as a lively, insightful and highly entertaining public speaker in the areas of entrepreneurship, business re-vitalization and growth. His reputation is based upon an unparalleled conceptual knowledge of his subject matter; complemented by a catalogue of practical examples and relevant “war stories”. In particular, he has the ability to tailor presentations to match defined Conference “themes” and, thus, meet the specific needs and desired outputs of individual organisations and client groups.
Over the past 25 years, Tim Atterton has devoted much of his professional career to working with owner-managers, Directors and management teams from private, independent businesses. His expertise as a business speaker lies in assisting businesses to improve profitability and achieve their inherent growth potential by: defining and documenting clear focus and direction that is based upon sustainable competitive advantage; driving necessary change; and adopting a stronger underlying strategic orientation. His work is driven by the desire to help business proprietors, key-managers and investors to build demonstrable and realisable net worth within their businesses that reflects fully the passion, risk and “sweat equity” that have been contributed by the founders, management team and other internal and external stakeholders.
In 2002, Tim Atterton was invited to join the Board of Western Australia’s Small Business Development Corporation and, a year later, was appointed Chairman on the recommendation of State Cabinet. He also holds other Board memberships in private companies.
Tim is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, a Fellow of the Institute of Business Affairs and a past Director of the Australasian Institute of Enterprise Facilitators
