Luke Beveridge's Biography
Western Bulldogs Coach Luke Beveridge is the expert on knowing what makes up the ingredients for success. Luke Beveridge is an outstanding coach and leader.
Luke’s achievements over the last 2 years are legendary. He inherited a side that was low on the ladder, low on morale, had lost its best player and captain Ryan Griffin to Greater Western Sydney yet was able to not only build a side that performed magnificently first year and played finals but was able to take it even further the following year by bringing home a premiership (and its first in 62 years). This was despite the side being written off after losing its captain and best player Bob Murphy and several other outstanding and integral members of the team.
These incredible achievements saw Luke voted by his peers as the Coach of the Year in both 2015 and 2016 – an amazing achievement. Also his selfless act of handing his premiership medal to injured captain Bob Murphy received plaudits from all around the world and saw him awarded the Spirit of Sport Award by Sport Australia Hall of Fame in October 2016.
Luke’s outstanding achievements occurred as a result of his ability to create a culture in which every player played their part in the team and if one player was out another would fit into that role. Everybody was on the same page and his achievements of having everyone pulling in the same direction is synonymous with successful organisations throughout not only Australia but the rest of the world.
Luke’s ability to create a culture of blending a so called group of “average players” into a super machine is a lesson that every coach around the world would like to copy. This X factor is something that probably can’t be learnt but the underlying message is that Luke (along with the support team he built around him) was able to give the players the confidence in themselves and their teammates to achieve the pinnacle. The respect the whole Western Bulldogs organization have for each other is unique and largely arisen as a result of what the humble, modest and selfless Luke Beveridge was able to.
Prior to Luke’s incredible achievements at The Western Bulldogs he was involved in the 2010 Collingwood Premiership, two premierships at Hawthorn Football Club as an assistant coach, and from 2006 – 2008 he created history by coaching St Bedes in the Victorian Amateur Football Association to Premierships in C, B and A Grades in successive years.
