The sporting career of Simon O’Donnell reads like a country boy’s dream come true. After excelling in sport at Assumption College in Kilmore, Simon moved to Melbourne to play Australian Rules Football with St. Kilda. After two successful seasons with the Saints, Simon was faced with a difficult but enviable decision – whether to concentrate on cricket or football. He chose cricket and has never looked back.
Simon went on to become a valuable all-rounder in the Australian one-day team, and was a member of the side when it marked its resurgence with a surprise World Cup win in 1987. O'Donnell the cricketer is most keenly remembered for a number of explosive innings in Australia's middle-lower order. His clean, powerful drives straight of the wicket and through mid-on were particularly effective. His feats included an 18-ball half-century against Sri Lanka in 1990, which remained the fastest 50 scored in ODI cricket for almost six years.
Since his retirement from cricket after the 1992/93 season, Simon O’Donnell followed his lifelong passion of thoroughbred horse racing. His company OTI Management Pty. Ltd., primarily a Horse Racing, Breeding and Advisory Company, was formed in 1994. Since its inception the company has had many successes on the racetrack, winning their first Group One event in 1997.
Simon O'Donnell hosted Melbourne radio station Sport 927's morning program with Kevin Bartlett and with Nine Network's commentary team, became the regular host of The Cricket Show, which airs during the lunch breaks of Tests in Australia. As a corporate speaker, Simon O’Donnell has the unique ability to combine business and life skills to create powerful business messages for his audiences.
