In a BBC career spanning more than 40 years, John has earned a reputation as one of the world's most experienced and authoritative journalists.
John Simpson is now the head of the corporation’s London-based team of foreign and special correspondents, as the World Affairs Editor.
Throughout his career, he has reported from 41 active warzones out of more than 125 countries. As a result, has more than earned his reputation as one of the World’s most authoritative journalists.
Starting out in 1966 as a trainee sub-editor in radio news for the BBC, Simpson – who has interviewed some of the World’s most famous and controversial leaders – has gone from strength to strength throughout his working life. He was presented with a CBE in 1991, and then went on to be named the Royal Television Society's Journalist of the Year in 1991 and 2000, and he was presented with Italy's most prestigious media award, the International Ischia Journalism Prize, in July 2010.
John has also received a number of other awards during his career, such as The Freedom of The City of London award, and a host of academic honours, including an honorary fellowship from Magdalene College in 1999. He became the first Chancellor of Roehampton University in 2005, a position he is still proud to hold and most recently received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Leeds.
John has dedicated his entire working life to the BBC. With almost 50 years in the industry, he is celebrated as one of the greatest journalists of our time, devoted to sharing ground-breaking and hard-hitting news.
After completing his education at St Paul’s School, followed by further studies at Magdalene College, at Cambridge University, John began his journalistic journey as a trainee sub-editor for Radio News. Now BBC’s World Affairs Editor, John is recognized as the most senior news correspondent for the BBC, covering some of the globe’s most defining moments in modern history.
Recognised as the face of hard-hitting journalism and playing a role in some of the most defining moments in modern history, whether on the ground or in the safety of a studio, he continues to demonstrate his dedication to journalism, and currently focusing on Iraq, Afghanistan, Nigeria, China, Russia and Ukraine.
