Fighting Fear: Thriving in a Turbulent World
Mark’s keynote highlights the following:
1. Out the back: The courage to commit.
Mathews did not start riding big ways overnight. Mark tells his story of how he began surfing and developing the skills to ride big waves. He explains the role that motivation played in overcoming his crippling childhood fear of the ocean. 'You have to want it more than you fear it!'
2. Wipe out: Surviving the Impact zone
Whilst surfing a famous big wave break in Tasmania, Mark suffered a potentially career ending injury. His physical recovery was relatively quick, mental recovery was another matter!. The technique mark learns and uses to finally overcome the mental scars, also gives him a new outlook on the importance of stress management.
3. The next wave: Preparing for the next opportunity
After recovering from his wipe out mark needs to attract and retain sponsorship. This is not going to be an easy feat with current state of the economy. He explains how he became better than his best and went on to win the next 3 annual 'Oakley Biggest Wave Awards' and signing sponsorships he had once only dreamed of.
